Ethics Statement:

I, Claire Bankole, am undertaking this narrative inquiry based action research project to explore

1) what myself and other survivors of trauma have found helpful or hindering to trauma recovery,

2) ‘what we have found to be true about God’ in the process (Ie our personal theologies),

3) how helpful or otherwise my own personal theology and practice is to other trauma survivors.

I have and will continue to observe good ethical practice throughout the process of this research project. This includes ensuring the following:

Confidentiality will be observed at all times; no identifying information will be revealed in relation to any participant.
Participants will be kept informed of progress.
Participants will have access to the written report of the research before it is published.
Participants have the right to withdraw from the research project permanently or for a resetting breather, at any time.
Participants will not be asked to share their traumatic experiences with the interviewer or in workshop discussions.
The principles of trauma informed care will be applied to the research process in order to minimise the risk of triggering or compounding a participant’s trauma. (These are: safety, trust, choice, empowerment, collaboration, peer support, and humility and responsiveness).

Due to the likelihood that research participants be survivors of trauma, I have also sought to keep the risk of distress to a minimum by ensuring that only those who meet the following criteria are entered as participants:

Each participant with a history of trauma must

Have a good support network in place.
Have healthy strategies for coping if they do get triggered.
Be sufficiently along their recovery journey to enjoy life and relate to others healthily.
Be comfortable engaging in healthy conversations about the physiology of trauma and trauma recovery.
Be happy to engage in conversations about (positive and negative) experiences of church and christian teaching in the context of having survived trauma.

Participants engaging in the pre and post training day interviews must also have easy access to therapeutic support (a trauma therapist) should they require it.
